The Friends of Hawthorne Park is a group of neighborhood volunteers who came together to support Hawthorne Park, Hawthorne’s new community park at 12th & Catharine Streets. Its mission is to ensure that the Park, which opened in July, 2012, remains a beautiful and vibrant community resource – safe, clean, and the venue for community events and performances.
The Friends organize and raise funding for free events such as the Jazz in Hawthorne Park concert series and Hawthorne Park Movie Nights, Spring and Fall Flea Markets, an annual Halloween Party, and Christmas music concerts. The Friends also weed and tend Park planting beds, keep the Park clean, and monitor the Park for security and maintenance problems. The Friends lead Hawthorne’s participation in the semi-annual Love Your Park cleanup program sponsored by the Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department, and are the liaison with PPR. Friends volunteers participated in the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s Green Machine program, under which new plantings were designed and planted to replace plants that died over the Park’s first winter, and to introduce a variety of beautiful new flowering plants into the Park. The Friends will maintain the new plantings.
New members are very welcome to support any one or more of these activities. You can join by visiting the Contact page, entering your contact information, and selecting Friends of Hawthorne Park from the drop-down menu. The Friends group was formed by the Hawthorne Empowerment Coalition, Hawthorne’s nonprofit community organization, in 2012.
