City's Youth Summer Programs to Focus on High Crime Police Districts

While the City will be working with the Recreation Department and the School District to provide summer programs for young people throughout the city, the priority for full funding will be those programs taking place in Police Districts designated as high crime areas by in Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey's Strategy for Reducing Crime.

These Police Districts are as follows:

Southwest Police Division
12th District
18th District
19th District

Northwest Police Division
14th District
35th District
39th District

Northeast Police Division
15th Police District

Central Police Division
22nd Police District

East Police Division
25th Police District

The Nutter adminstration has made it clear in its five year plan that the initiatives pursued by the administration will aim at achieving specific goals set forth for the city--in this case, reducing crime.

In implementing the program, the administration is seeking to build a stronger partnership between the summer programs,  the Recreation Department, and the School District.

Obviously, this does not address all the issues and problems associated with funding summer and after-school programs. But it establishes at least one important goal related to these programs--that is, to help reduce youth violence and to make our neighborhoods safe.
