2007 Review - Captain Weaver's Report - A significant reduction in crime other than homicides and non-gun robberies
closed out 2007. Unfortunately, the number of homicides remained the same as in 2006 at five and non-gun robberies increased
a bit. > > > > December 2007 Meeting - As customary, this meeting is held solely for the purpose of
wrapping hundreds of gifts for lower-grade elementary school children in the District. The gifts are donated by local businesses,
wrapped by us and then presented to the children at a grand Christmas Party given for them the next day at the Mummers'
Museum. They get to eat their favorite foods and meet Santa and other cartoon characters in person! > > >
> Dancing Teens - The 3rd District Police will approach owners of a neighborhood restaurant (6th & Washington Ave.)
to discuss volunteering the facility for one weekend evening a month so that local teens (5th & Carpenter area) will have
a means of socializing in a safe setting. The teen dance will make use of both police and volunteer chaperones and, since
the neighborhood already has strong community policing and police mentorships in place, will provide the teens with an opportunity
to have a fun outlet close to home and be surrounded by familiar faces. > > Honoring the Guards - The
3rd District Advisory Council is making plans to award individual school-crossing guards for their stellar performance in
getting our local children safely across, in and around the very heavy traffic in this District. The award will tentatively
be named for the late mother of a PDAC member who was herself a crossing guard for many years. More to come on this one! > > > > FYI - Installation of crime-fighting cameras has already begun as an experiment on the streets
of the City's most crime-ridden areas and are scheduled to expand as dictated by their success...look for an increase
in parking-violation employees in the neighborhood! In an effort to free up our police force to do police work, the Parking
Authority will now handle more ticket-writing duties!...remember, not wearing a seat belt is still a moving traffic violation,
so buckle up! > > > > PDAC's February 2008 meeting was cancelled due to weather.
