ZONING

Subject: Update from the Zoning Code Commission

Date: Thursday, June 18, 2009, 11:43 AM

In order to keep you up to date with the work of the Zoning Code Commission, I am
forwarding you links to recent reports that were presented at Zoning Code Commission
meetings.

The New Philadelphia Zoning Code: Best Practices Report

was presented for the Zoning Code Commission's consideration at its June 10, 2009
meeting by the consultant team of Clarion Associates, Duncan Associates, and
partners.  The report describes possible best practices on several zoning issues
that Philadelphia will have to address as it rewrites its code.  A full discussion
of this material is planned for the Commission's meeting on July 8th.
Center City Zoning: Lessons from Other Cities

http://zoningmatters.org/files/CenterCityZoningLessonsFromOtherCities_0.pdf
was presented to the Zoning Code Commission at its May 13, 2009 meeting by Mr
Michael V. Dyett, FAICP, of Dyett & Bhatia Urban and Regional Planners.  The
presentation summarized the state of zoning regulations in Philadelphia's downtown,
compared it with best practices in peer cities, and offered suggestions on how
Philadelphia could use those precedents to meet its planning goals through more
effective Center City zoning.

COMMUNITY
JUNE PDAC Report:

The Captain is fulfilling his Coast Guard Reserve duty and was not present to give
the usual activity report.  There will be no Captain's Town Hall Meeting in June.

Officer Delgado did report, however, that our main source of crime in the area
continues to be driven by the "theft-from-auto" syndrome!

Inspector's Town Hall Meeting:  Tuesday, June 16, 2009, 6:00 p.m. at 2301 Snyder
Avenue.

Family Day - Change the Date:  The Third District Police are sponsoring a Family Day
on Saturday, August 8, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The festivities will be
held at Annunciation BVM at 12th & Wharton Streets and will consist of food, fun and
games for the kids--we're going for a carnival atmosphere.  All children must be
accompanied by an adult!

Each 3rd District neighborhood is encouraged to participate, and we're open to ideas
for our Hawthorne table--something of interest to the kids while simultaneously
highlighting a unique characteristic of our neighborhood.  Suggestions anyone?  How
about the Rec Center or our green-space-to-be?  How do we make them the basis for
something fun?  Help!

Any community orgnization or business that wants to help out through contribution or
donation will be named on flyers and announced at the festivities.

COMMUNITY

For those interested in locally grown foods, here is an announcement from Bella Vista Natural Foods, located on 9th Street:

Please come to Palumbo Recreation Center at 10th & Fitzwater on Wednesday June 10 at 7pm to learn about the food co-op that’s forming in the Italian Market.
Bella Vista Natural Foods is looking toward converting to a member-owned co-op.  Find out what this means and how you can be involved. BVNF owner Molly Russakoff and Weaver’s Way managing director Glen Bergman will be talking about how co-ops work and how we can get started in transitioning from a sole proprietorship to a cooperative grocery.  The meeting agenda is listed at the end of this newsletter.

Come early as we expect this to be a full house!!

Steering Committee Members Wanted

We will be choosing a steering committee of 8 to 10 people so please consider getting involved in the important planning stages.  The steering committee will coordinate all tasks needed to move the co-op from its early stages through the establishment of more formal structures.  The committee will be responsible for coordinating research and information gathering, surveying potential members, overseeing market research and feasibility study, financial projections, exploring options for financing, coordinating membership meetings and reporting on findings, preparing a business plan and handling public relations.  Remember, without a steering committee, we can’t go forward with the co-op!!! If you are interested on being on the steering committee but are unable to attend the meeting, Please email bellavistanaturalfoods@gmail.com or stop by the store during business hours.

BVNF is located at 1010 S. 9th Street, right next store to Fante’s.  We are open Tuesday through Friday from 9am till 6pm.
